Summary: | One hundred twenty five middle class adults from the affluent localities of Patna (Bihar) participated in a study, which was designed to explore the facets of poverty syndrome of Indians. The findings yielded two major facets. First was a selfish orientation that leads to strive for money and power. The second facet was family-centric beliefs and preferences where only family members are trusted and favoured. The two facets were bound together and were accentuated by the prevailing corruption and uncertainty in the society, but were unrelated to the adequacy of infrastructure, supportiveness of other people in the neighbourhood, their own quality and comforts of life, socio-economic conditions, and age. The findings thus indicated that poverty syndrome is a shared psycho-social phenomenon of the Indian middle class. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT] |
