Description
Summary:A main advantage of progestogen-only contraception (POC) in comparison with combined hormonal contraceptives is its high safety with regard to thromboembolic events. Even women with cardiovascular or thromboembolic risk factors can use POC. However, side effects differ from those occurring in users of combined pills and sometimes are difficult to treat. Many of those are transient, while others last longer and need treatment. The most often mentioned adverse events include unpredictable bleedings, changes in mood or libido, bloating and skin irritations. Counselling about possible adverse events prior to prescription and adequate treatment encourages the patient to continue with the method although it is not always well tolerated at the start, but is in fact a very healthy form of contraception. A variety of treatment options will be discussed. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
