Description
Summary:In fiction characters start out with an idea of the world based on their experiences, such as middle school students Marlee, discovering she might have to change her vow of silence, in the historical novel The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine (2012) and Javier, torn between loyalty to friends but unexpected satisfaction in reading and being a student aide, in the contemporary novel Fighting forDontae by Mike Castan (2012). Mariée struggles to speak up even when, during a surreptitious meeting with her friend in the woods, she meets the boy she had a crush on, JT, and his brother, Red, whose vandalism and bullying goes unassailed in the community.\n At the bottom of the double page spread is a ruler to show relative length of more familiar items, a stick of gum and popsicle stick Many readers will recognize chopsticks but perhaps not a drumstick for a drummer, or a police officer's nightstick, all shorter than the animal.
