Description
Summary:Reviews the book "Understanding and Treating Schizophrenia: Contemporary Research, Theory and Practice," by Glenn D. Shean (see record 2004-00092-000). This compact book covers much of the vast field of schizophrenia with an easy-to-read style and a great amount of information. Topics include history, diagnostics, epidemiology, language and thought, vulnerability, genetics, neurobiological models, medications, neurocognitive research, cognitive-behavioral therapies and community life. Although the book would provide a good introduction to the field of schizophrenia there are shortcomings. One major problem in the sections on treatment is that topics selected for presentation seem not to be evidence-based and this results in some odd choices for inclusion and coverage. The evaluation of Soteria was not well done and results were modest at best whereas the evaluation of the Achievement Lodges was elegant and the project has been, and continues to be, a huge success. There is no recognition of the impact of the consumer movement on service delivery systems nationwide. The topic of recovery, a major concern of consumers and many researchers, is also absent.
