Description
Summary:This article gauges the educational consequences of Turkey's 30-year-old armed conflict that arose as a result of its Kurdish problem, which has long awaited a solution. To address potential econometric problems in estimating the impacts of conflict on education, such as omitted variable bias and the endogeneity of the occurrence of conflict, a differences-in-difference (D-D) estimation method is implemented. This method utilizes geographic and cohort variations in exposure to conflict to estimate the causal effects of armed conflict on educational attainment. The estimation results indicate that the effects of exposure to conflict may vary with the level of educational attainment analyzed in this study. It appears that while exposure to conflict is positively associated with the primary-school completion rate, it is negatively related to both the middle- and high-school completion rates. Furthermore, these negative estimated effects appear to be larger for females, for those who were exposed to conflict for a longer period of time, and for provinces with a historically greater share of Kurdish population.
