Description
Summary:This study analyses the private schools opened in Usak town at the turn of the century (19th to 20th). To this extent, first of all non-Muslim Greek and Armenian schools are going to be touched. Afterwards, information would be given on the Frer School of the French missionaries. Finally, schools entitled Gülsen-i Irfan and Numune-i Edeb are going to be told. It would be given an emphasis on the Numune-i Edeb School, and its founder Hüseyin Remzi. In consequence, it is argued that private schools were opened in Usak town by non-Muslim Greeks, Armenians, missionaries and Muslim-Turks. It is understood that muslim-Turks also actively took part in education. It is also determined that possible research in the history of education as a part of the local history would make crucial contribution to the concerning current literature. This study is based on various documents of the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry, particularly on educational and provincial yearbooks called "salname". [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
