Description
Summary:This study examines the influence of stimulus modality in a procedural learning task to analize to what extent there may be one or more semantic processors for words and pictures. A semantic categorization task was administered to 256 participants manipulating both stimuli modality and concepts to categorize. Results show how reaction times (RT) decreased significantly with practice. There are also differences in RT between stimulus modality: training with words and then categorizing pictures produce significant improvement, fact that does not occur training with pictures and then categorizing words. In turn, the change of concepts to categorize in the test phase results in significant slowdowns in both modalities. Results suggest the existence of a single semantic store that is accessed directly by pictures, while words require an added lexical processing that consumes more time in processing.
