Summary: | It is not possible, or perhaps even desirable, to undo the critical history of interpretation. But the capacity to move beyond such historicist judgments as well as their reactionary alternatives and toward a postsecular critique that takes the faith claims of the tradition and of scholars with seriousness seems crucial in the extreme. Here, Brueggemann and Hankins stress the need for critical biblical scholarship that does not try to explain away all that may be awkward for Enlightenment rationality or all that has the bite of theological and political summons to it. |
