Summary:This experiment was concerned with the effects of CS-US interval on both trace and delay avoidance conditioning in the rat. CS-US intervals of 5, 10, 20, and 30 sec. were employed. Delay conditioning was superior to trace conditioning. There was U-shaped function relating CS-US interval to speed of acquisition for the delay conditioning procedure. No significant trend for CS-US interval was found in the trace conditioning procedure. This latter result was discussed in terms of the particular contingencies of reinforcement affecting the subjects in the trace conditioning procedure.
