Description
Summary:Presented lists containing a mixture of auditory and visual digits to 3 groups of 8 undergraduates. Two groups of Ss were instructed to recall the items separately by modality. Group SR (serial recall) wrote the digits in boxes to indicate their input position within the list but was not instructed to recall in a mode-by-mode order. With the exception of auditory items from early serial positions, recall in the SR group was lower than recall of the 2nd modality reported in either of the other groups. This finding suggests that processing and rehearsal of verbal items in short-term memory are inherently organized by presentation modality rather than in terms of the temporal sequence of events.
