Accordingly, it is not surprising that a major effort of Western political thought has been the investigation of and concern for the life of reason. Indeed as Aristotle has shown, philosophical inquiry is capable of establishing both the principles of human rationality and the purposes of political existence. This program is supported by the fundamental belief that the very principles which structure human consciousness ought, at the same time, to order the realm of social and historical existence. |
