Summary:Joanna, or Joan, Makepeace was a gentle and timid young girl to be thrown into the political turmoil of Europe in the first third of the thirteenth century. Such a girl was likely to be sacrificed by her masculine relatives, who were eager to exploit anyone for their own selfish ends. By birth and relationships, however, Joan was an important person; by her character and disposition she was fitted to exercise a remarkable influence in the affairs of England, France, and Scotland. Joan, therefore, has deserved better treatment than she has received at the hands of historians of her own and later times.
