Summary: | Dudo of Saint-Quentin, in his half-legendary account of the creation of Normandy c. 911, tells an engaging story about the Viking Rolf and the King of France. Rolf, after receiving the lands of the lower Seine from King Charles the Simple and doing him homage, was told that recipients of royal grants were expected to kiss the king's foot. Rolf replied that he would never bend his knee to anyone or kiss anyone's foot. But in response to further French entreaties he allowed one of his warriors to do the honors. The warrior seized the king's leg, tipped him over backwards, raised the royal foot high in the air and kissed it, amidst the uproarious laughter of the Norse onlookers. |
