Summary:Although individual development is viewed as a central focus in counseling, the recognition given to the importance of moral growth within the counseling process has been limited. Group counselors may promote moral growth of individuals by recognizing and facilitating the examination of moral issues expressed by members. This article presents a synopsis of the stages of moral development and a rationale for considering the significance of moral stages in the selection of members. Facilitating moral growth will generally occur in the fourth or productive phase of group process when members tend to deal with differences as opposed to ignoring them.
