Description
Summary:Located on a former channel of the Grand River in Ottawa County, Michigan, the Battle Point site is a Native American burial locality dating to the latter half of the Late Historic period. Twenty burials, primarily extended coffin interments, were recovered during salvage excavations at the site. Numerous trade goods, including knives, firesteels, silver ornaments, and glass beads, were placed with the dead as grave accompaniments. Historical documents, as well as the artifact assemblage, suggest that the cemetery was used between approximately 1820 and 1835. The Battle Point data provide significant information about culture change among the early nineteenth century Native American populations of the Upper Great Lakes.
