Jean 2:13-22 est le résultat d'une longue tradition. On peut penser que l'épisode n'est pas à sa place dans le quatrième évangile. Une lecture narrative critique du texte suggère que sa forme canonique et sa place actuelle dans le texte présente « les juifs » comme manquant de foi et oriente le lecteur vers une expérience de foi véritable, fondée sur l'écriture et la parole de Jésus.
