Summary: | Recent attempts to measure category clustering were examined and three conclusions were reached. (
a) The atheoretical approaches which have been taken are responsible for the confusion about the proper measure for describing clustering. The problem demands a theoretical solution; clustering only becomes well defined by reference to a theory. (
b) Measures of clustering are not model-free; conclusions relating clustering to other variables must be restricted to the appropriate class of theories. (
c) The existence of a clustering effect is not a sufficient reason for constructing a scale of clustering. |
