Description
Summary:The relationship between microvariation in Mississippi Valley lowland environments and the general distribution of prehistoric archeological sites is explored with data collected during a Soil Conservation Service-sponsored environmental assessment. Models of subsistence-settlement behavior are developed which include a base settlement/specialized activity site dichotomy. Several hypotheses are presented, tested, and refined, the results of which indicate a clear bimodal pattern in the distribution of base settlements across the lowland environments, which may be indicative of seasonal use of some ecological zones.
