Summary: | Changes in patterns of musical behaviour are not only due to modernisation and/or westernisation, but also to "mediamorphosis", i. e. the electronic mutation of musical communication. The concept of mediamorphosis may serve as a tool in the attempt to analyse the impact of the electronic media upon the creation of music and upon the technical and economic mechanisms governing the dissemination of music. In order to show the need for a more comprehensive theory of mediamorphosis, two specific aspects are described: a) the possibilities inherent in the new technical means of musical creation with regard to the preservation of traditional non-Western tonal systems, on the one hand, and the enrichment of Western tonal systems, on the other; b) the impact of mediamorphosis upon the Western concept of copyright. Whilst the World Intellectual Property Organisation is already investigating into the legal implications of this change, sociomusicology is only beginning to cope with the task of assessing the manifold consequences of mediamorphosis. |
