Summary: | The several views on variability in seedling establishment of sugar maple and on its mortality rates over the first decade are reviewed and compared with the negative exponential and power function models for describing the age distribution of seedlings. The age distribution for sugar maple seedlings was obtained for three different locations in Wisconsin, one northern, one southern, and one central. Analysis shows that the power function adequately describes the seedling depletion and that the effects of drought, warm spring temperatures and other environmental influences are not detectable in the surviving numbers of seedlings. The organization of the forest canopy above the seedling layer, particularly in relation to the presence of multiple strata in old growth forests, appears to have some influence on seedling survival. |
