Summary: | An architectural designer's mental imagery of memorable places presents essential information for design inquiry and often structures the meaning and semblance of future places. This study explores the codification and ordering of complex, memorable place-experience in the mind of the designer. The study was designed to determine if patterns of meaning vary across three groups of designers; design students entering professional education, design students exiting professional education, and practicing architects. Eight constructs were found to exist under three basic frameworks for meaning—emotive, experiential, and objective. Memorable place-experiences, stored in the designer's image bank, are explored as the appropriate content for the construction of a theory of memory and imagination in the act of design. |
