Description
Summary:The growing importance of early release programs in psychiatric hospitals opens a new frontier for research. Empirical findings from a number of areas are reviewed here in an attempt to isolate variables influencing this hospital procedure. The findings come from work on: types of commitment; the decision-making process involved in release and its relation to the involvement of the patient's family; post-hospital adjustment, both in terms of role expectations of the patient and the nature of his post-hospital environment; the perspective on the mental hospital as one phase of treatment; and negative evidence from studies of the chronic hospital patient.
