Summary: | The Pass Creek site is composed of two conical timbered lodges located in the Bitterroot Mountains of southwestern Montana. Construction techniques and geographic location indicate the lodges were built by a band of Northern "Lemhi" Shoshone Indians. This conclusion is corroborated by an informant who witnessed the lodges in use at the turn of the century. The Pa$S Creek wickiups apparently reflect both the persistence of ancient aboriginal subsistence strategies and the acute conditions on Indian Reservations during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. |
