Summary: | In the 1942 edition of the Standard Catalog for High School Libraries the annotation "Not recommended by CHSC [Catholic High School Catalog] Committee" is applied to seventy titles identified by a committee of the Catholic Library Association. The selection of titles for negative recommendation reflects such criteria as conformity with the Catholic Church's Index Librorum Prohibitorum, the rejection of moral and religious ideas at variance with the Church's teachings, the preservation of a favorable image of the Church in history, and the moral implications of fiction. The need for negative recommendations resulted from the distinction between the Catholic philosophy of education and the theory of Progressive Education reflected in the Standard Catalog for High School Libraries. An annotated bibliography identifies probable reasons for the rejection of each title. |
