Summary: | Examines 18 extant Catalano-Aragonese panel paintings from the 14th and15th century that contain musical iconography depicting the Feast of Herodand the Dance of Salome, the Decapitation of Saint John the Baptist, and Salome offering the head of Saint John the Baptist to Herodias. Although neither the stories of the Saint nor the contracts drawn up with the artists required the depiction of musicians, the Aragonese painters chose to include them in their works. It is likely that the artists included music in these scenes because of the important role that it played in the courtly banquets during the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. |
