Summary: | Internal and external follicle diameters of both primary and secondary follicles of Texel x Ossimi and Merino x Barki ewes were greater, at birth, than those in either respective parent breed; the density of primary follicles at birth was less in the cross-breds than in the parental breeds, for both crosses. There was a greater increase of follicle diameter with age in the Egyptian breeds, and mean follicle diameters of the crossbreds were intermediate between those of parent breeds at ages of 3–6 months and above. Grading up Ossimi sheep with the Caucasian Merino resulted in progressive decrease of mean internal follicle diameter. The F2, with more merino blood, had a greater frequency of the smallest diameter follicles than had the F1. |
