Description
Summary:There is good reason to expect continued growth in rail shipments of bituminous coal to the electric utilities. The problem of air pollution is largely being overcome by technological developments. The threat of competition from nuclear fuel has been delayed by rising construction costs, fear of nuclear fuel shortages and difficulty in finding acceptable plant sites. Prospects for the railroads' share of the resulting coal traffic are bright, because there is still some question whether mine mouth generation or coal slurry pipelines can pose a large-scale challenge to the unit train as the most economical way to transport energy.
