Summary: | Research on corporate strategy is analogous to a helix, ever-circling but at the same time progressing to higher stages. The first stage was naive description. It was followed by normative or prescriptive treatment of business decisions. The next stage is sophisticated descriptions, and it will be followed by sophisticated prescriptions. This will let the organization know where it has been going, and it uses systematic intelligence to define a strategy for where it is going.Teaching about strategy should use metaphors, images, and concepts to help in decision making. These can help cultivate the student's systematic intelligence by encouraging interaction between the real and ideal. Profound changes are now occurring in corporate governance as directors are now more involved in corporate strategy decision-making. Increasing use of board committees to select chief executive officers may also change the practice of how decisions are made, leading to more emphasis on corporate ethics, managerial succession, and financial results. |
