A CIDADE DE ACARI/RN: DO APOGEU AO ANONIMATO/THE CITY OF ACARI/RN: FROM THE ACME TO ANONYMITY

This paper presents an analysis of the context of the socioeconomic slowdown in the city of Acari, caused by the end of the activities of the cotton agro-industries. To understand the city, we adopted as our methodology a geohistoric approach, focusing, albeit in brief, on the importance of cattle and cotton for the rise and expansion, respectively, of the city urban site. For the theoretical discussion, we worked on the concept of city, with two objectives: to reflect on it as a place of reproduction of capital and of labor relations, and understand it as a place of memory and history. Finally, we talk about aspects of the city life, our study object, in which coexist, as contradictory pairs, the crisis triggered since the closure of the factories, and the harmonious daily life, although anonymous, demonstrated by its residents. Having occupied a prominent position in the economic and historic scenario of Rio Grande do Norte, we address its history and memory to justify this city as our reference area. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
