Description
Summary:Since he is not fully satisfied by Jacques Lévêque de Pontharouart's arguments in his book Paulmier de Gonneville: son voyage imaginaire, the author of this paper reexamines the dossier on new bases. Demonstrating the irreconcilable contradictions in the documents considered in themselves, or compared with each other, he catches the Abbé out on several occasions as a forger and disseminator of forgeries. He concludes from this that it is necessary to consider texts which emanate from Paulmier alone, with no solid external corroboration, as having no critical value. Among these texts is Gonneville's Relation. The author incidentally provides a commentary on a passage in this Relation that he considers to be an interpolation by Paulmier himself.
