Summary:This article presents the life and work of the pre-eminent painter of the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Russian Empire, Ilya Repin, and analyzes his manifold connections with the land of his birth, Ukraine. Although Repin came to be known as the central figure of the Russian national school of art, he maintained close links to his Ukrainian homeland, always had close Ukrainian friends and colleagues, and repeatedly turned to Ukrainian themes during his long career as a painter. The article also briefly examines Repin's identity and national loyalties within the context of the turbulent political developments of his time and the evolving separation of Ukrainian from imperial Russian identity.
