Summary:The current economic and financial crisis is causing effects of great transcendency as the strong increase in unemployment and cuts in social spending in active policies of employment and local development, precisely at an essential time for a public action in the field with accurate and appropriate measures to counteract the impact of the crisis. Before this reality, after review of different approaches of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the compilation of information from studies on the subject, the article considers how this can be one tool among others that, although with a limited scope, can assist in providing solutions for local and social development to facilitate the collaboration between business, government and society in the search of alternatives for different economic growth which has caused to this tragic situation. All this, if CSR is incorporated in a business decision making based on sustainability from an integrated and strategic approach, according to the demands and expectations of the different stakeholders and not as a mere instrument of short-term of marketing or corporate image.
