Summary: | The principal aim of national parks has historically been the preservation of the natural environment contained in them through limiting and avoiding both activities and uses, where conservation should always take priority over other activities. The tragedy of the commons is displayed in both letter and spirit by the people and government of the Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) region where each one of them is, in practice, adding another sheep to his or her particular flock for free unrestrictive grazing in Dachigam National Park (DNP), irrespective of its legal status as a protected area. The fundamental ecological cost of pastoralism is the breakdown in self-maintenance of rangeland landscapes caused by excessive total grazing pressure at the wrong times and places. The biodiversity concerns with respect to the issue of grazing are diverse and complicated. Overgrazing is widely considered to be an irrational and problematic phenomenon that needs to be properly controlled so as to avoid further land degradation and environmental deterioration. |
