Summary:We use a new US-firm-level dataset covering all domestic and international sales made through eBay, an online marketplace, to provide insights about firm heterogeneity in online international trade. One is that the share of firms that export is surprisingly high, at 85%. •The share of eBay firms that export is 85%.•Firms export to a large number of markets, 9.3 on average.•The largest 10% of sellers account for a 70% market share.•As distance to export market doubles, the number of exporters decreases by around 1.5.•A typical firm–destination relationship has a median duration of 2 years.
