Summary: | Bajetta examines two letters in Italian addressed to Gian Luigi "Chiappino" Vitelli, Marquess of Cetona. While their contents are apparently merely complimentary and their concrete purpose quite elusive, the importance of these documents shouldn't be undervalued. Textual evidence suggests, in fact, that these letters may derive from a lost holograph; in addition to this, an analysis of their historical context has revealed some interesting facts about the short-lived but peculiar relationship between Elizabeth I, Vitelli, and the painter Federico Zuccaro, whose visit to England in the mid-1570s has frequently been a matter of debate for art scholars and historians. |
