Summary: | In this article, the animal names in Suhayl u Nevbahâr were studied in terms of origins and structural, semantic features. SN was a masnavi composed of 5703 couplets, and it was translated in 1350 into Turkish from Persian by Hoca Mes'ud. Masnavi is a long poetic story of love between Suhayl, the son Yemen sultan's son, and Nevbahâr, the Chinese emperor's daughter. SN has a rich vocabular. There are many animal names in the text of Masnavi. 96 animal names were used 606 times in the manuscripts text. 68 names are in Turkish, 18 names are in Persian, 8 names are in Arabic and 2 names are in Greek. The most commonly used names are: at (191), kus (53), arslan (30), it (25) and tavar (20). The majority of the names are Turkish. Today, 16 names of these animal names aren't used in Turkish: ahta, bedinus/bidnus, bûzine, çetük, deglügeç, esb, gurâb, murg, neheng, peleng, su issi, sîr, sütür murg, tayr, uçar ve yam.
