Transformation of Glucose to 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furfural by SiO2–MgCl2 Composite

5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (2a) was formed in a 70% yield by dehydration of glucose in MeCN at 140 °C in an autoclave using a composite of MgCl2 with silica gel which served as an acid catalyst under dry conditions. 10% and 32% yields of 2a were obtained from mannose and galactose, respectively.
