Summary: | In many phenomena in the field of complex fluids and granular materials the interaction between granular particles and the fluid around them is important. To simulate these two-phase flows of fluid-solid problems microscopically in two dimensions, we develop a finite element method for the Newtonian fluid phase while the granular phase is implemented via a discrete element method with polygonal particles. We discuss the necessary algorithms (time integration, mesh generation) as well as the boundary conditions and address the issue of convergence of the fluid code in the presence of granular particles. |
