Summary: | Reviews the book, America's Health: A Report to the Nation (1949). Here is a book that presents the findings of the National Health Assembly, and they are clear and concise, factual and orderly. The press of the original work of getting an acceptable consensus of the thinking of rather large groups in the short time provided is apparent in two ways, however. There is duplication in several places, particularly in the field of rehabilitation, which is fully discussed as a part of the report of the group working on Chronic Disease and the Aging Process but appears again hardly any more in detail in the chapter specifically assigned to it. Another evidence of rush is the humorous situation which arises in the discussion of special groups to receive education about nutrition; the special groups include almost every individual conceivably existent in a population. There is a brief discussion of the places where psychiatric personnel work and the extent to which recognized needs are unfilled. In review's opinion, to the psychiatrist, it offers a liberal education in the medical needs of the nation and the ways they are met by existing health services. Of particular interest will be the report on State and Community Planning for Health. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved) |
