Description
Summary:In the last several decades, people have become much better at doing things right. Well-understood project management tools help companies manage schedule, cost, and requirements; program management tools help companies leverage value across projects; and portfolio management techniques help spread risk across projects and across time. Storytelling links potential future states to the actors within them. Once this link is made, problems that will exist, and potential solutions, become much clearer. Telling a story, seeing the potential end user as a character in a narrative, helps the expert get out of his or her own head and empathize with someone else's reality. Thinking about the world through someone else's eyes, observing that world from new perspectives, offers a powerful window on alternate futures. By encouraging people to create characters and explore how they live and what their problems are, storytelling can help them to escape the logic of the past and imagine a truly different future.
