Description
Summary:In an interview, Gene L. Dodaro, comptroller general (CG) of the US, talked about his job. Dodaro said it was certainly challenging taking over as acting CG when Dave Walker left GAO in 2008. About the time he stepped into that new role in March 2008, the financial markets -- and the economy generally -- had begun to decline. In October 2008, Congress passed legislation creating the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), which gave important new responsibilities to GAO. To help oversee this $700 billion program, they had to be on-site at the US Department of the Treasury immediately and report to Congress on TARP-related activities every 60 days. Fundamentally, his job is to provide strategic vision and leadership for GAO. They must understand the needs of Congress, and work effectively with members of Congress and their staffs so that GAO addresses the most pressing national issues. GAO has provided him many diverse and interesting challenges over the years.
