Description
Summary:The effect of a single dose of dexamethasone administration before surgery on blood glucose level was investigated during surgery in dogs. Twenty-eight female mixed-breed dogs (aged 18–24 months) weighing 17.53 ± 3.04 kg and undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy were randomized to receive dexamethasone (0.25 mg/kg/bw), or placebo, simultaneously with anesthesia induction. Serial blood glucose measurements were recorded and compared in the two groups. Compared with those receiving placebo, patients receiving dexamethasone showed an elevation in blood glucose level during surgery that was statistically significant 60 min after dexamethasone administration. These findings strongly recommended that clinicians monitor glucose levels during operative procedures to prevent complications resulting from dexamethasone-induced hyperglycemia and probable postoperative complications in hospitalized patients.
