Description
Summary:Local Chinese Americans, including descendants of the Market Street Chinatown, were alarmed at the destruc- tion of the archaeological site, and contacted city officials and local archaeologists to demand that the site be studied prior to its destruction.6 In response to this community pressure, the Redevelop- ment Agency eventually contracted with Archaeological Resource Services (ARS) to conduct salvage excavations, which began on july 22, 1985, and concluded on Septem- ber 23, 1988. ARS sorted most artifacts and cataloged many of the ceramic, glass, and metal artifacts, while most animal bones, shells, plant specimens, and soil samples were simply bagged and boxed.7 In the midst of the hasty excavation of the Market Street Chinatown archaeological site, a grassroots effort emerged to create a museum to tell the history of the Chinese in Santa Clara County.
