Summary: | The great love for music that the house of Bragança had is strongly reflected in the collection it preserved in the Ducal Palace in Vila Viçosa. Its musical archive includes a collection of polyphonic choirbooks in which, alongside the music of other composers, are works written by Tomás Luis de Victoria, in particular his works for Holy Week. Antiphons, improperia, and motets by the Spanish composer were conducted by the most gifted chapel masters of Portugal and performed by singers of the same caliber that for the most part included graduates of the Colegio dos Santos Reis. In this article, Archilla Segade refers to this collection of music to determine the reception of Victoria's music at the palace and examine the good cultural and musical relationship that existed between Spain and Portugal during this period. |
