Summary: | This essay examines the oft neglected, yet crucial, relationship Molière had with Spanish theatre through a close textual analysis of two plays separated by only ten years. Given the numerous similarities between the plays and absence of a French translation of Moreto's work, this article underlines Molière's knowledge of Spanish theatre as well as the latter's significant impact on his concept of identity construction. Special emphasis is given to the individual and society and their process of mutual manipulation in assembling and dismantling reputations and identities as part of the ongoing struggle for control over identity creation and distribution. |
