Summary: | The authors studied the cases of e-commerce companies, MercadoLibre, created in Argentina in 1999, and eBay, founded in the US in 1995, from their inception until 2012, using a qualitative approach. The cases were analyzed using a framework from the literature on internationalization of companies, covering global trends and factors of the country, the industry, the company and the entrepreneur. It was possible to note an interaction between the four behavioral approaches for the process of internationalization: the Uppsala Model, the networks perspective, international entrepreneurship, and Born Globals. Each approach in isolation was unable to explain the internationalization processes observed. It was also found that there is a strong relationship between the strategic importance of the country and the mode of entry or operations adopted. Countries with higher strategic relevance were operated with local subsidiaries. On the other hand, countries with lower strategic relevance had remote operations. |
