Description
Summary:Virtual communities of practice have long been recognized as a specific form of intra-organizational network for the exchange and development of knowledge and best practices. The objective of this article is to highlight the issues raised by participation in a virtual community of practice in a business setting. More specifically, it examines the motivations for participating in a virtual community of practice and the role played by the host organization. To do this, an empirical study of the "Human Machine Interface" community, a multinational virtual community in an engineering firm, was conducted which provides a profile of the users and highlights the role of animation and trust and that of a system of internal recognition for active participation.
