Summary:A one-pot synthesis of 3,4-dihydro-3-hydroxyisochroman-1-one (lactol) by oxidation of indene using tungstic acid-hydrogen peroxide is reported. The synthesized lactol was converted into acetal derivatives , which were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against , (Gram-positive), , (Gram-negative) strains, and antifungal activity against and by broth dilution method. The compounds show potent activity against in comparison with ampicillin and exhibit modest antifungal activity.
