Description
Summary:This chapter describes the climate of the northern Colombia called the Colombian Caribbean region. The climate in this area of Colombia is driven by the movement of the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ), which produces two seasons: a dry (low rainfall) season from November to May and a rainy season (high rainfall) from April to October, with a season of transition called 'veranillo de San Juan' between June and July. Also, the vulnerability to natural hazards is described; with emphasis in phenomena such as hurricanes and storms, tornadoes and cold fronts. Although the Colombian Caribbean is not known as a natural disaster area, hurricanes (e.g., Joan in 1988 and Lenny in 1999), tornadoes, windstorms and cold fronts, can affect the climate of this Caribbean area, causing damage to infrastructure and loss of life in some cases.
