Summary: | As the only work by Johann Sebastian Bach published between "The Art of Fugue" in 1752 and the first editions of "The Well-Tempered Clavier" in 1801, the four-part chorale settings and their curious publication history have been the subject of a story with many unresolved details. Complicating the matter is the fact that most of the documentation was destroyed by war. Thus, Arnold Schering's summary (1918) is the principal source for the events. This essay does not presume to answer the questions that have been raised in various articles, but merely treats one piece of the puzzle. |
